Computer keystroke logging is a technique for recording writing in real-time. It is based on a cognitive approach to writing and presents a writer-based perspective, as opposed to the analysis of writer’s final text or product. The focus of this article is to provide an overview of possibilities for writing process research made available by the rapid development of echnology. The article first presents computer keystroke logging as a relevant method among others, and discusses previous research based on the method. This is followed by a case study of the writing process of a native Russian learner of Estonian as a second language with target language proficiency at the C1 level. The data was collected using the ScriptLog computer programme, which keeps a detailed record of the writer’s activity on the keyboard combined with a retrospective interview.
