A kinetic investigation of the electrochemical removal of copper ions from solutions of different initial metal concentrations using fixed packed-bed electrode in circulated batch system was made. The electro-deposition of copper was found to be electron transfer controlled and follows first-order kinetics. The rate was found to be dependant on initial copper concentration, applied current density and supporting electrolyte concentration. The change of copper concentration with time could be described by the equation:
C=C0e-kt where
k=k0e-α(C·D)
The value of k0 seemed to be independent of the initial concentration of copper in the treated solution. However, the value of α depends on the initial concentration of copper and equals:
–
α = 0.0073 for C0 ⩽ 100 mg/l
–
α = 0.0058 for 100 < C0 ⩽ 200 mg/l
–
α = 0.0041 for C0 ⩾ 250 mg/l
